A great video by Alan Wakeman from 1970 highlighting the negative effects of the motor car on urban spaces.
In it, Alan briefly outlines a plan to limit and remove traffic from within the existing city blocks of London that are defined by the current bus routes.
Inside these block most people already have to get about on foot. Why not make it easier for them by banning traffic altogether within these areas? Inside these traffic free blocks, goods and people could be moved about on small, silent, emission free electric trucks as easily as they are at the larger railway stations.
Or by bicycle.
These traffic free blocks could be introduced one at a time without any major upheaval to the cities normal traffic flow. Within each block, all traffic signs could be removed and trees could be planted, walking in the streets would cease to be a battle and become a pleasure.
